I spent a week at The General’s Cabin drafting my first-ever novel. This was the first time — but not the last — that I have spent a week by myself in a remote setting. Any anxiety I might have had quickly dissipated upon talking to Joy when I made my reservation and I was further comforted when she called to check on me and assure me that I could contact her quickly and easily if I had concerns or questions. Excellent cell phone coverage allowed me to tether my laptop for internet coverage. The king bed was comfy and warm (I especially appreciated the electric blanket during a couple unexpected icy nights). And the amenities — scented bath gel and shampoo, quality coffee beans with a grinder and choice of drip or french press, a fabulous library, everything I could have needed and more! This is the perfect get-away. The cabin is unique in its architecture and history. Walking around the grounds is a delight. And, the surrounding countryside is beautiful.
We fell in love with The Generals Cabin the moment we opened the handmade walnut doors and walked inside. It’s everything you dream of when you think about a rustic, cozy cabin but with all the comforts of home. Soft sheets, fully stocked kitchen, toiletries, endless amounts of literature and a fireplace. We stayed for an extra long weekend over Christmas, spending our days in the Daniel Boone National Forest exploring and our evenings hanging around the fireplace enjoying each other’s company. The big kitchen table was perfect for great meals with our family and the view in the kitchen area reminds you how lovely it is to be surrounded by nature! We explored down by the pond and around the land on the paths, our Yellow Lab was in heaven as well! He was a fan of taking long naps under the table and by the fireplace after long walks! The Generals Cabin was everything we expected and more!
Heaven on earth!! Everything you could possibly want here! Rustic and elegant all at the same time. So many things included down to shampoo, charcoal and coffee! We just came back from a night stroll after a rain shower! If you have ever wanted to rent a cabin and get away from it all…this is the place!
You will NOT be disappointed with this cabin! The privacy, seclusion, and proximity to Daniel Boone National Forest make it the ideal spot for a quiet and nature filled getaway. The beautiful decor and warm hospitality of our hosts made us feel like family from the moment we arrived. The cabin is fully stocked with anything you could need or want and the surrounding pond, hiking trails, and night sky views are unmatched for this area. Would recommend the General’s Cabin to anyone!
Simply put, I’m in love. My husband and I visited The General’s Cabin for our wedding anniversary and we just loved it. It was beautiful, well-appointed, comfy, and inviting. The owners went out of their way to leave flowers and champagne to celebrate our anniversary (and my birthday, which is the same week!). They also called on our first night to make sure that all was okay and to walk me through the fireplace ignition switch (and answer any questions we might have). We walked the trails on the property, which were terrific, (our dog LOVED it there), visited the pond, and gazed upon the stars at night, which were easy to see in the country. We are already planning on returning next year for our anniversary and hope to make it an annual trip.
The General’s Cabin is one of those places that you hesitate to share widely, because it’s so special to you. It’s also a place that you want to tell everyone about because everyone should have an opportunity to experience this gem. I heard about the place for years before our schedules lined up, and it was better than I could’ve expected. The drive to the cabin was exceptional, the place was private and had everything we needed. We cooked one of the best meals of our life that evening, and the magic of this place brought out the best in us. I loved the openness of the home’s design, the inventive use of windows, the books and maps, and the sense of discovery that was conjured by the extensive trails, pond, and vistas. We had so many memorable moments that it feels hard to believe we were only there for a couple of days. Joy and Michael were kind and thoughtful hosts, and the place was clearly built, and has been maintained, with love and pride.
My husband, Eric, and I stayed at the General’s Cabin for our honeymoon last week. I will admit that when Eric initially brought up the idea of staying in a rural, rustic cabin for the week, I wasn’t overly excited. But one look at the cabin and the surrounding areas and I couldn’t help but fall in love. We opted to take our two puppies which was a great decision. The property that the cabin sits on has private walking trails, a fishing pond and is completely fenced in which we all LOVED! It was so nice to be able to lay in the hammock, grill dinner or enjoy coffee out on the beautiful front patio overlooking the woods and let the dogs run free. Joy and Michael were wonderful to work with — communication was easy, and they took the time to add personal touches like roses and champagne at check-in. They even called on our second night to check on us and give some pointers on where to visit.
We just returned from our stay at the General’s Cabin and were so pleased with everything. The location was idyllic and the cabin was well-appointed and spotless. We loved hiking with our dogs and then coming back and relaxing by the fireplace. It was the perfect way to end a busy year and celebrate a new one.

My name is Joy Massey and I am The General’s daughter. I have offered my father’s stunning cabin as a vacation rental for the past 18 years following an extensive renovation. Many returning guests comment on the serenity and peace they find when stepping through the one-of-a-kind black walnut doors, hand-built by the general himself. The General’s Cabin is a beloved family home, rife with history and charm. Our guests can look forward to flexible check in and check out times if available. I encourage all to bring their four-footed family members to enjoy the cabin and property, dubbed “Disneyland for Dogs” by a previous guest. My hisband and I are very hands-on with the cabin and property so as to ensure an optimal holiday experience.
