Russell Springs, of Russell County, Ketucky, is an exciting vacation destination for adventurers looking to rent a short-term cabin, cottage or lodge from local independent owners and managers. The city, set at the center of unique Kentucky activities and attractions in all directions, is known as the “Gateway to Lake Cumberland,” which is a large man-made lake east of the Mississippi River. The setting is hilly and beautiful with excellent star-gazing.
The Lake Cumberland Reservoir, created by the Wolf Creek Dam, has a scenic shoreline of more than 1,200 miles and is a popular tourist destination in the state for sight-seeing, photography, hiking, fishing and water recreation. Lake Cumberland is a full-recreation lake that welcomes power boats and pontoons, as well as kayaks, stand-up paddle boards and canoes. This lake abuts two Kentucky state parks: the shore-based Lake Cumberland State Resort Park, and the island reserve of General Burnside State Park at the center of the lake. The 300-million-year-old Creelsboro Natural Bridge is a particular destination point for hikers. This naturally-formed limestone arch is more than 60 feet high and 120 feet wide, with a Native American burial ground positioned at the top. Don’t forget to pack your fishing poles: Lake Cumberland cabins are steps away from a generous population of striped bass, walleye, sturgeon, sauger, and brown, lake and rainbow trout.
The city of Russell Springs itself was incorporated in the 1930s and is home to a downtown historic district where vacationers can explore and shop the Main Street Mini Mall, the Russell Springs Antique Mall, a collection of local restaurants that includes American and Mexican-style cuisines — and even pay a visit to the original old-fashioned Star Theater. Newer areas of the city boast a municipal park, an outdoor public pool and a lending library. Other neighboring attractions in the Russell Springs area include family-friendly go-kart tracks, a golf course, a bowling alley and a fish hatchery.
